Blessed is the Nation

US flag at sunrise

Here’s to a Happy New Year! I know I’m not alone in experiencing a strong awareness of hope as we enter 2025 and beyond. There is a sense for many of us that God is giving our country, and by association, the rest of the world, another chance to consider Psalm 33:12:

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom He has chosen as His heritage.”

In the absence of devotion to God, mankind tends to worship other “gods,” like celebrity, identity, wealth, self-gratification, media, technology, and self-image, to name only a few. I certainly allow my devotion to be distracted from time to time. If we don’t deliberately and regularly position God in the most prestigious spot in our minds and hearts, we will stray from our purpose in life. That straying is clearly how this fantastic country has become broken in countless ways.

But the brokenness, the overall confusion and chaos of the recent past, has obviously stirred the majority of people to speak up and ask for qualities that simply seem godly. Honesty. Clarity. Common sense. Respect (for others, for the law, for strong morals, for God).

While the plans to bring about such qualities don’t necessarily guarantee success or more godliness in our country and the world, they powerfully indicate that hope is alive. I pray God will continue to bless us all in 2025 and in the years to come. Again, I wish you a Happy New Year!
